Two years ago, in the early days of COVID, we discovered Mama Cindy operating a Food Kitchen from a sidewalk as her personal response to the crisis of widespread hunger that came to our town during the pandemic. And of course we added her outreach to our weekly delivery of veggies to ECDs and Food Kitchens providing food throughout Hout Bay.
It’s been a beautiful partnership with Cindy. Not only do we get to see her in action in Imizamo Yethu where she serves more than 500 people every week day, but she’s also a frequent shining face at the farm where she brings along young kids to learn about growing healthy food. Our staff love hosting these joyful kids and just last week they planted another full bed of seedlings for us.
And now Cindy has pushed it up another level, literally, to the top of Imizamo Yethu. Most days during these past months Cindy noticed kids and adults from the very top of IY were showing up at her food kitchen at the bottom of the hill. The food was often finished by the time they arrived. So last week she opened another food kitchen on the curb at the very top. In her words, “It was chaotic” as hundreds of people lined up for a simple, nutritious bowl of love. Now she’s serving at the second curb side kitchen four days a week. This week more than 1,000 kids and adults stood in line between the two of them.
Thanks Cindy for your Love, and thank you all the Supporters at Love in a Bowl who with your donations help ensure no person in Hout Bay is left behind, in want of a meal!
